Freefall, Freefail, Freedom

Happy Monday, or whatever Monday you choose.

Have you ever wanted to start something new, but were unsure of how to do it or where to start? It can be a little overwhelming. Here you are with all the energy ready to get started, but unsure where to begin. Maybe you are feeling as if you bit off more than you can chew. Or perhaps that is what is so exciting about it. When you are inspired to do something, you almost feel like a new person. It’s a new day. This is the next phase of your journey. Life is an exciting adventure.

But, and there is always a but – all this energy can make you restless. You know you need to do something. The current trend is to fail fast and move on. How can you direct this energy without being reckless? Can you experiment on a smaller scale? I personally like the “fake it till you make it " route. I attempt to be confident and accept the opportunities and challenges as part of my growth and discovery. When I am in the excitement phase, the ideas just seem to build on each other. What was a simple approach is now a global conglomerate…in my head. There is the danger of starting many new things enthusiastically and not finishing any of them.

You might fail and be unable to recover. Achieving most goals involves investment and sacrifice. We read or hear about all of the innovators who maxed out their credit cards because they had a dream. They believed in themselves. They persevered. Sure, they had some rough times, but there was always a couch for them to land on. Nobody wants to end up in the poor house. Thinking about failure before you have even tried can derail a project. Yes, there is probably some element of risk and being cautious is wise. However, if you only look at the potential disasters, you may genuinely miss out on an incredible opportunity. The “what ifs” can derail a new venture faster than a meme stops trending. When the fear threatens to halt your forward momentum, remind yourself of your assets. If you do not have many trusted friends, have you explored programs and grants that can help you reach your goals?

What’s next? Pick your battles. You are going to hear a lot of conflicting viewpoints and advice. What does your gut tell you? It is not the time to avoid conflict and discomfort. Explore your fears and anxieties with a fine tooth comb. Work through them. Nothing worth doing is easy. You do not want to back down before you have even started. It may also be having too many fantastic ideas to choose from. You have to win your inner battles before you can hope to conquer your external war. Prepare yourself for the jump. Pack your parachute and check it twice and then jump out of that mental plane. Your hand is on the ripcord. Do you trust yourself?
